From the flock’s founding our aim has always been to produce rams specifically for the prime lamb production and has always been managed on a commercial basis. MLC recording was started in 1968. The flock was split into 5 families in 1980, the reason for this was the limited choice of recorded rams of the correct type.

The family system works as follows

The best ram from family 1 is selected for structural correctness, conformation and index. This ram is used on family 2. A ram is selected from family 2 using the same criteria and used on family 3 and this system continues through the rest of the families. The females remain in the same family they were born in.

After the flock was moved to Brotherstone in 1999 lambing was put back from early March to mid April and since this time ewes have not been fed concentrate after lambing and the lambs don’t receive any creep feed.

After weaning lambs are fed a small amount of concentrate, the lambs are scanned late September, after which the ram lambs are moved onto a Pedigree feed regime, ewe lambs are reared on a commercial basis.

Very detailed records are kept at lambing time for lambing ease and birth vigour. This enables us to select stock ram lambs and replacement ewe lambs from ewes that consistently produce lambs that are easily born with good birth vigour. 

This is why we produce rams that are consistently in the top 5% of MLC EBV’s and have many return buyers at sales.

Our rams are fine boned, smooth haired with deep loins, broad backs and meaty gigots. 

We have enjoyed many prime lamb show successes including Scottish Winter Fair championships in 1994 and 2007, as well as many first tickets and native breed championships.
